I'm reading the 6th installment of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books: Long Way Home. The story is about the disappearance of one of the characters, and in the search for him we are led to Dumfries, Scotland and right into the Garden of Cosmic Speculation. I thought, oh this must be made up, but then I thought, maybe it isn't. It isn't. This real place is the installation of artists, Charles and Lily Jencks, who painstakingly created it from land and materials to address the human longing for answers to questions we have about the beginnings of the universe and other conundrums.
From his website: A water cascade of steps recounts the story of the universe, a terrace shows the distortion of space and time caused by a black hole, a "Quark Walk" takes the visitor on a journey to the smallest building blocks of matter, and a series of landforms and lakes recall fractal geometry."
It is open to the public once a year through the Scotland Garden program. Count me in! http://www.charlesjencks.com/#!the-garden-of-cosmic-speculation
